Private Birth Doula Care with Laura

Hello! I’m Laura. I am a mom to four, childbirth educator and doula. I believe birth is a sacred transition, a testament to the strength God has placed within you. Since 2013, I have been deeply passionate about walking alongside couples during this transformative season. My mission is to help you enter your birth experience overflowing with hope and joy.

I believe that God designed your body with intricate, beautiful wisdom. He didn't just create the miracle of life; He created the perfect process to bring that life into the world. My goal is to help you peel back the layers of fear and cultural noise to rediscover that design.

Whether we are diving into the mechanics of physiological birth or learning how to navigate the mind-body connection, I am here to ensure you feel educated, empowered, and deeply supported. I don’t just want you to get through your birth, I want you to be transformed by it.

This is an exciting time for both of you. I work closely with partners to ensure they feel equipped, confident, and ready to be your primary earthly support.

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." — Psalm 139:13-14

What’s Covered in Calm Birth Classes

1. The "Biology Bit" (Physiology)
  • The Uterine Muscles: How the different layers of the uterus work in harmony during labor.
  • The Fear-Tension-Pain Cycle: Understanding how adrenaline (fear) can stall labor, while oxytocin (the "love hormone") and endorphins (natural pain relief) facilitate it.
  • The Mind-Body Connection: How our thoughts and environment directly impact our physical progress.

2. Mindset and De-hypnosis
  • Identifying Fear: Pinpointing subconscious fears about birth and replacing them with positive beliefs.
  • The Power of Language: Learning to use "birth-positive" language (e.g., calling a contraction a "surge" or "wave") to keep the brain in a state of calm.
  • Positive Affirmations: Training the mind to focus on the strength and capability of the body.

3. Practical Relaxation Techniques
  • Breathing Techniques: Usually includes "Up Breathing" for the first stage (to oxygenate the muscles) and "Down Breathing" for the second stage (to work with the body’s natural expulsive reflex).
  • Self-Hypnosis & Visualization: Guided scripts and mental imagery used to enter a state of deep, focused relaxation.
  • Anchor Points: Using touch, scent (aromatherapy), or specific music to instantly trigger a relaxed state.

4. The Birth Partner's Role
  • Protector of the Space: Training the partner to manage the environment (lighting, noise, interruptions) so the mother can stay in her "birth bubble."
  • Practical Support: Techniques like light-touch massage and advocacy tools to help the partner feel confident and useful.

5. Decision Making and Navigation
  • The BRAINS Framework: A tool for making informed choices (Benefits, Risks, Alternatives, Intuition, Nothing, Smile/Special circumstances).
  • Navigating Interventions: How to use the relaxation tools even if the birth path changes (e.g., inductions or C-sections).

6. Hands-on Comfort Measures
  • Utilizing tools and position changes for comfort: Rebozo, birth ball, spinning-babies techniques, counter-pressure, hip-squeezes, etc.

7.  The Golden hour and Breastfeeding
  • The benefits of skin-to-skin and the golden hour after birth.
  • Basic breastfeeding education: A model of supply and demand, what does a good latch look like, how to trouble-shoot problems, and when to reach out for help.
